Craig Sweeney, senior vice president of global strategic talent solutions at WilsonHCG,  spoke to journalists at HRO Today about the need to upskill workforces to fill skills gaps.

He said: “With such a competitive talent market, companies should be looking inward and focusing on upskilling and reskilling their current employees to fill gaps that might be difficult or costly to source.”

Sweeney raised another point about teams working together. Recruitment and learning and development teams tend to operate independently but by joining forces, they'll be able to reach their common goals while building stronger partnerships in the long run.

The starting point, according to Sweeney, is understanding what the business objectives are and what the organization is trying to achieve. "Both talent acquisition and learning and development have a common goal: to make the organization better through talent", he added.

He also recommended that companies leverage market data to identify what talent they need and where that talent exists in the global marketplace. With this information in hand, companies can better target their talent strategies, upskilling or relocating employees in areas where there is a skills shortage.
